A Refutation to the Problem of Evil

The Problem of evil

  1. If God is good and all-powerful, he would stop evil.
  2. There is evil.
  3. Therefore either God doesn't exist, He isn't all powerful, or He isn't good.

Refutation

This argument has a hidden weakness, and no, I'm not going to be arguing about free will. I will show you the weakness by continuing the argument to its logical conclusion.

  1. (Premise) There is evil.
  2. (Premise) God could not allow evil to exist and still be God.
  3. Therefore, God does not exist.
  4. If there is no God, there is no objective standard for right and wrong. ("All things are permissible.")
  5. Therefore, evil is a subjective preference we all make.

Our premise contradicts our conclusion. Therefore, this argument is not valid. In fact, it becomes clear it is just plain nonsense. Evil is the reason for rejecting God. But without God, evil is nothing more than an opinion we hold. The reason for objecting to God goes away. And in fact...

The existance of God is actually proven by evil.
  1. (Premise) There is evil.
  2. There can be no objective standard for evil unless there is a God.
  3. Given our first premise, God must exist.
